Mondi and Proquimia have launched a new paper-based stand-up pouch for dishwashing tabs in Spain and Portugal, marking a step toward more sustainable packaging solutions. This collaboration aims to replace traditional plastic pouches with a more environmentally friendly alternative.
The new stand-up pouches, which contain 20 water-soluble dishwashing tabs, are made using Mondi’s re/cycle FunctionalBarrier Paper 95/5. According to Mondi’s internal product impact assessment, the paper-based pouches significantly reduce CO2 emissions from cradle to gate compared to the previous plastic packaging.
The pouches are designed to meet the recyclability requirements for Spain and Portugal, with over 85% of the packaging made from paper, including the zipper. This high paper content allows the entire packaging to be recycled in paper streams in both countries, offering a more sustainable disposal option for consumers.
Mondi’s re/cycle StandUpPouch is produced in-house, starting with kraft paper made from responsibly sourced fibers. The paper is then coated to provide the necessary barrier properties to protect the dishwashing tabs, before being printed, slit, and converted into the final pouch.
Alessandro D’Agostino, Business Development Manager for Home & Personal Care at Mondi, emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “By closely collaborating with our customers, we aim to balance resource efficiency with the lowest possible environmental impact.” He also noted that the launch aligns with Mondi’s MAP2030 commitments, aiming to keep valuable raw materials in circulation.
Cristina Arola Vilella, Packaging Manager at Proquimia, expressed the company’s long-term sustainability goals: “The long-term aim is to introduce recyclable packaging throughout our entire portfolio, and Mondi is the ideal partner to help us do this.”
This launch is part of a growing trend toward more sustainable packaging solutions, addressing both consumer demand and environmental concerns.
